Way to include Blog Media image but hide it here? (So article previews on blog category pages etc. include featured image, but same image isn't huge at top of article once clicked.)

Simple way is to delete Blog Media image then add Intro image but no Full image via Images and Links tab. No css trickery needed.

Note that Blog Media tab is a Helix thing and images are put into images/year/day folders automatically with various sizes and thumbnails created in the backend. Removing an image from the Blog Media article tab can (will?) remove it entirely from the images folders if it's only used on one article.

If going down the css methods path:

preview has image in div class="article-intro-image"
clicked article has image in div class="article-full-image"

Make div.full-image display:none. Maybe add a class to the article such as "no-article-full-image"

Need a code module/extension to add custom css on a per article basis such as "Add Custom CSS" or "HD-Custom CSS" .
(classes can be added in menu item settings, would cover all articles under that menu item.)
